There seems to be a phenomenon that just a few people use Windows server 2008 as PC operating system when compared with Windows Vista. Actually, Windows Server 2008 has almost exactly the same features as Windows Vista (SP1), but is remarkably faster and more stable! People say: “Windows server 2008 is Windows Vista without the bloat“! There exist much more people using Windows server 2008 as operating system beyond our imagination. When forgot Windows server 2008 password, how to reset server 2008 administrator password whether it is on a domain controller or non-domain one?

For one thing, in Windows Server 2008, you can create a password reset disk for any local user account on a member server (a non-domain controller in a domain) or stand-alone server (a server in a workgroup). The following steps could help you complete resetting Windows server 2008 password.

If you can still log on Windows, just click on Start, Control Panel and User Accounts; click on "Make Changes to Your User Account" and then "Change Your Password"; type your current password into the "Current Password" box and then type your new password into the "New Password" box; type a password hint and then click "Confirm" to change your password. If you are locked out of your computer with a Windows server 2008 password reset disk in hand, you can do like this: type "blank" into your administrator password box and click "OK" when Windows displays a message saying incorrect; click on "Reset password". Insert your password reset disk into your USB slot or CD drive. Follow the commands laid out in your password reset wizard. Log on with your new password and you can also follow the steps in the beginning of this part to change the administrator password to a more memorable one.

For another, you can't create a Windows server 2008 password reset disk for a domain controller because a domain controller doesn't have any local user accounts, only domain accounts stored in Active Directory. However, a typical use for a password reset disk would be to create one for the all-powerful local administrator account on your server. To do this, get a blank formatted floppy and follow these steps.

Firstly, press Ctrl-Alt-Del to open the Windows Security dialog box; click on the Change Password button to open the Change Password box; in the User Name field, type the name of the local user account; in the Log On To list box, select the name of the computer; the Backup button should now appear at the bottom left of the Change Password box. If it doesn't, backspace inside the User Name field to erase what you typed and type it again. Do not type anything in the Old Password or New Password fields. Click on the Backup button to start the Forgotten Password wizard; click next, insert your floppy, and click next; type the current password of the account for which you are creating a reset disk and click next. When the wizard is finished, click next and then Finish. Click Cancel twice to close the Windows Security screen and return to your desktop.

Right now, you are able to reset your Windows server 2008 password with a windows password cracker whether there is a local user account or not.
